A small, exquisite object — a pair of late 19th-century opera glasses inlaid with mother-of-pearl and set in brass that has aged into a soft, patinated gold. Held to the eye, they perform; set on a shelf, they hold their own as sculpture.
The construction follows the convention of the great Parisian opticians of the period — the binocular barrels turning on a center wheel, the eyepieces threaded for fine focus. The form and detailing are in the style of Le Maire of Paris, the most renowned house for opera glasses of the era, though the maker's mark is not visible.
