A small, sculptural hardwood headrest carved by Karamojong makers in northeastern Uganda — traditionally used as both a low stool and a sleeping support, its form deeply tied to pastoral daily life.
The piece reads as it was made: a single block of hardwood worked down to a curved seat and a pinched, columnar base, the surface bearing the marks of hand-tooling and decades of use. The patina is dark, oiled, and even — the kind of finish that only comes from being lived with.
From a California private collection, with prior provenance through Rolf Wishmann, Nairobi. Reads beautifully alone on the floor next to a chair, on a low plinth, or as a side table for a single book and a glass.
