A small shell-encrusted frame holding a reproduction of an 18th-century parrotfish or wrasse illustration by the Italian naturalist Luigi Balugani (1737–1770). Balugani traveled with the Scottish explorer James Bruce, sketching specimens in detail that pre-dates much of the work the genre is remembered for.
The shell frame nods to grotto traditions — a counterpoint to the precise scientific line behind the glass.
